How does a business or organization find itself with more than one web site or intranet?
- Corporate acquisition of other business entities with established sites
- Company divisions or subsidiaries that have stand-alone sites
- Individuals or departments within the organization that begin creating their own web solutions
While the paths to having more then one web site are many…the results are often the same: - Different interpretation of corporate goals and objectives, leading to inconsistent brand elements and information architecture
- Lack of universal access to key information and resources
- Excessive time and money invested in keeping independent sites and intranets updated
- Inconsistency of data across multiple sites
- Fragmentation of site traffic resulting in lost opportunities for cross-marketing and lead generation
Independent sites that have different design and navigation elements, use different technologies and are powered by different data structures weaken the organization’s brand, frustrate site users, and are very costly to maintain, whether the costs are measured in actual dollars expended, or in the form of wasted human resources. Increasingly, companies are recognizing the risks of this fragmented approach and are seeking a way to consolidate their sites, without sacrificing the positive benefits of the input of multiple content contributors. I understand that while a decentralized infrastructure is not optimal, it may not necessarily be in an organization’s best interest to adopt a “one size fits all” system. After all, it’s the specialization of each business unit or department that makes their contribution valuable. I work with We clients to develop core standards and implement a universal corporate brand, while still allowing autonomous product or service segments to communicate appropriately with their target audiences. The consistency of the design and persistent navigation elements strengthen the brand and provide users with a holistic view of the organization. I then architect, engineer and develop an enterprise-wide data solution and Content Management System to control all intranets, extranets, and/or public web sites. Through the development of a central content repository, I achieve an efficient means to update multiple sites with a single act of data entry. My information management solutions increase data sharing and collaboration across business units. This allows my clients to maintain focus on their customers and their products, not the accuracy of their data, ultimately leading to greater efficiency and reduced costs. |
